Miles Wood, son of former Sabres forward Randy Wood, opened the scoring for the Devils, jamming a loose puck under Robin Lehner. Wood inserted himself into a crowd at the top of the crease and was able to slide a shot into the net for his 10th goal of the season. Lehner turned aside other early New Jersey scoring chances, ending the period with 11 saves. Buffalo was kept out of the net in the opening period, unable to get any of its 11 shots by Cory Schneider.

The Sabres got on the board 5:27 into the 2nd period on Jacob Josefson's 2nd goal of the season. Josefson took advantage of a Devils turnover in the middle of the ice and finished off a clean breakaway by wristing a shot by Schneider, tying the game 1-1. New Jersey struck back a little over three minutes later with a power play goal. Marcus Johansson's one-timer beat Lehner glove-side, putting the Devils back in front 2-1.
