From the Locker Room: Sabres-Flyers, Round II

The Buffalo Sabres looked to even the score against the streaky Philadelphia Flyers on this Friday night. The two teams will meet up three times this season, with Philadelphia already taking game one of the season series in Pennsylvania on December 14th by a score of 2-1. Buffalo had a chance to defend their home ice against the black and orange before taking to the road for these teams' final meeting of the year back on Broad Street on January 7th, 2018.

Both goaltenders played admirably for the first two periods, but then madness ensued in the third. Six goals later, including a combined four from both teams in the final 2:10 of regulation, the Sabres strode into the weekend with a 4-2 victory over the Flyers on home ice.

Go inside the locker room to hear from Eichel, O'Reilly, Lehner and Housley following the win.

Jack Eichel:

On the late scoring outburst: "I thought we did a good job in the third of sticking with it. There's been times this year where we've had good periods and nothing to show for it after two, or we're tied or we're down a goal. Whether we take a few risks or push a little too hard, we end up giving up goals. Then we find ourselves chasing. I thought tonight we did a good job sticking with our gameplan through the sixty minutes."

On the undeserved 5-on-3 penalty kill that the team built momentum off of: "The guys that were out there did a great job... couple good sticks, Lehner makes the saves, they battled. It's unfortunate we were down 5-on-3 but our penalty kill stepped up big for us. That's a really good powerplay over there. Lots of good players. It's part of the game. We talked about special teams being a big factor tonight."

Ryan O'Reilly:

On the strong effort from the team resulting in a hard-earned W: "It was a much more consistent effort. We had a good start, and we talked in the room about sticking with that, to keep doing the things we're doing well. I think we got rewarded in the third from it. We got some good bounces there that gave us a spark."

On his odd goal sparking the offense after very good early chances: "Offensively, it was kind of frustrating how many grade-A chances we had. I myself, I wasn't shooting the puck very well. To get a chance like that and just try and put it in that awkward area for him and get a good bounce, it was nice. Gave us a spark and some confidence. It was something that we needed."

Robin Lehner:

On snatching momentum: "We came out really good in the second [period]. Other teams are going to have some momentum in the game, but I think we took it back. We did the right things and we made them earn their opportunities; we didn't give them out. I think that was a good step forward."

On the team helping him out in front during the 5-on-3 PK: "I think penalty killing is a huge momentum booster for you when you do that well. I think we've been playing our 5-on-3's very well. Credit to our PK and the guys who sacrifice themselves and work very hard on that. It was nice we could take advantage of it."

Phil Housley:

On the team's effort: "I thought we had the start we wanted. Had some really good offensive zone time, sustained pressure. In the second period, it was trading chances, and that was the focus after the second. I thought we were playing a really solid game. I just needed the guys to stay the course and not forcing anything; take what's given. The guys stuck to it and we got a big goal by just throwing a puck to the net by [O'Reilly] and later, a nice tip by [Evander]."

On what led to the success: "I thought we were firing a lot of shots from the point from bad angles. Ryan's goal was a result of that; just getting it in there. I thought our guys did a good job of getting to the net. There were a lot of rebounds that were left in that second-layer position... our shot mentality was really good tonight."
