Prince Approached Journey Before Releasing "Purple Rain"

May 3, 2016
Journey songwriter/keyboardist Jonathan Cain has revealed that Prince asked his band for permission to release "Purple Rain" because the late singer thought it sounded similar to Journey's song "Faithfully."

Cain recalled going to Columbia Records' offices in Los Angeles in 1984 to take a call from Prince, who said, "I want to play something for you, and I want you to check it out. The chord changes are close to 'Faithfully' and I don't want you to sue me."

Cain replied, "Man, I'm just super flattered that you even called. It shows you're that classy of a guy. Good luck with the song. I know it's gonna be a hit."
