Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - In a surprise move, the Buffalo Sabres have waived forward Matt Moulson. The Sabres say they’re making the move for the purpose of assignment.

Moulson has had two stints in Buffalo, playing 297 games. He scored 46 goals with 77 assists for 123 points.

The winger played 304 games for the Islanders, netting 118 goals and 105 assists for 223 points. Moulson also played in Minnesota and Los Angeles.

This season, Moulson was pointless in 14 games. He is not a fast skater and doesn’t fit in with Phil Housley’s system.

Buffalo has also brought up Evan Rodrigues from the Rochester Americans. Rodrigues broke his hand in preseason and missed almost two full months. In eight games with the Amerks, the forward had five goals and five assists for 10 points.

Rodrigues has played 32 NHL games, scoring five goals and three assists. To make room for Rodrigues, Buffalo sent Kyle Criscuolo back to Rochester. He had no points in eight games and was minus-four.

The Sabres practiced in Buffalo on Monday before leaving for Denver to take on the Avalanche on Tuesday.
