Report: Vontae Davis visiting with the Bills

February 15, 2018

Joe DiBiase reporting

One question surround the Bills this offseason is whether impending free agent cornerback E.J. Gaines would be resigned by the team. Today we got our first indication of where the Bills may be leaning.

Former Colts’ CB Vontae Davis is taking his first free-agent visit today with the Buffalo Bills, per source.

Vontae Davis was released by the Colts after 6 years with the team in 2017. Davis started just 5 games for Indy before undergoing season ending core muscle surgery. Davis was released after he was critical of the team for how his injury situation was handled. His being cut makes him available to teams before other free agents.

Davis is a 9-year NFL veteran, but is still just 29 years old. In 112 career starts he has 22 interceptions, and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2015. Davis was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 1st round of the 2009 NFL Draft. After 3 years in Miami, he was traded to Indy for a 2nd round pick.

Davis would provide the Bills an alternative to paying E.J. Gaines in free agency, what would look to be a more expensive decision. If Davis were to sign in Buffalo, he would start opposite Tre'Davious White.

Schefter did say this was Davis' "first" free agent visit. So, unless the Bills want him bad enough to not let him out of the building without a contract, Davis will visit other teams.
