Jake Guentzel scored less than three minutes into the game for the Penguins, but Victor Antipin scored to even the game at 1-1 in the first period.

Jake Guentzel's goal came on Pittsburgh's third shot of the game, thanks to Sidney Crosby and Conor Sheary. Victor Antipin answered for the Sabres less than two minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. The shot came from just inside the blue line and stayed along the ice to get underneath Antti Niemi and across the goal line. Zemgus Girgensons and Ryan O'Reilly were credited with the assists on Antipin's first goal as a Sabre.

Johan Larsson took the game's first penalty for holding, but the blue and gold were able to kill off the minor without giving up the go-ahead goal to Pittsburgh. The Sabres outshot Pittsburgh 14-9 in the opening twenty minutes. Chad Johnson stopped eight of the Penguins' nine shots, while Niemi made 13 saves for Pittsburgh.
