Right up front, I gotta say I'm not a fan of American Idol. I've only seen snippets of shows and maybe the "highlight" reels of previous shows' opening-round losers. I watched the debut of the 10th season last night and actually stuck around for 90 minutes. I kinda tuned in half to see the people who thought they could sing, and half to check out Steven Tyler as a judge for the show. Turns out, he did a helluva job...big improvement on the contstantly annoyed and acerbic Simon Cowell. I "get" Simon's gig on the show, and his blunt honesty to wanna-be stars was needed and at times, hilarious. But with Steven Tyler & J-Lo, it seems a bit kinder & gentler, and we already knew that Tyler was an impeccable showman. That guy made me laugh out loud a few times, and it was like watching an excited kid off his meds. He was funny, charming, and sincere. I thought he did a great job. I won't necessarily hang around for much of A.I. after the un-talented & singing odditites are weeded out...once they get down to the people who can sing, it becomes more of a karaoke show, and that's when I lose interest. That said, I still hope he sticks with his other job...
